The role of global youth and citizens in clean energy

16th of September 2020 | 15:00 – 16:00

Event Overview

In this extraordinary year, the 11th annual Clean Energy Ministerial meeting (CEM11) will be hosted virtually by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, livestreamed for the first time ever, and open to a global audience. Together CEM members account for 90% of the world’s clean power and 80% of global clean energy investment. Their collective commitment is to be inclusive, action-oriented, focused on delivering tangible real-world change. In the only session dedicated to youth in the CEM11, Misk Foundation, aims to bring together experts, young people, and relevant speakers to discuss the role of youth as in important resource for the world’s transition to the 21st century and their important role to support clean energy and how best to empower them. 10 years down to the 2030 deadline to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, and with the advent of COVID-19 there is little doubt the world is at a crossroad. Youth are the key resources that will energize the world being shaped today: they form half of the world’s population. Those born in 2020 will likely live beyond 2100, and most of them will practice professions that do not exist yet. In fact, youth express positive attitudes to the future, to emerging challenges and to entrepreneurship. This shows they refuse to embrace gloomy, dark, pessimistic scenarios, guiding our way forward. Youth are keen to ensure that challenges are being addressed, including that of clean energy. As such, what is the role of youth in supporting clean energy development and how best to empower them?
