Innovation for zero carbon cities

28th of September 2020 | 14:00 – 15:30

Event Overview

No single sector or level of government, however innovative or impactful, can accomplish all the transformational change required to meet the challenges of transition to clean energy, tackling climate change and “Green Deal” type initiatives. With cities responsible for 80% of global GDP and 75% of energy-related carbon emissions, resilient and net-zero cities are necessary to maintain a climate-safe world, while also offering countries a competitive advantage in attracting global talent and investment and promoting social innovation and well-being. In order to ensure that necessary emissions reduction pathways are achieved, cities must be at the forefront of the design of innovative, citizen-centred solutions to improve and/or reduce the ways energy is used in city specific context. Innovation in both technology, policy and investment will be at the heart of a successful transition. This session will explore how increased investments in clean energy RD&D in cities could drive citizen-focused, innovation-driven action to accelerate the energy transition necessary for a net zero and climate resilient world. This dialogue will explore how unprecedented levels of “recovery funding” can be invested in resilient, low carbon, holistic solutions that combine all kind of innovations (i.e. technological, digital, social , nature-based, cultural, financial), and drive synergies between the existing pipeline of innovative solutions and research and known cities’ needs, challenges and priorities for a sustainable and resilient future.
